October is exciting for so many reasons; fall is starting and we are experiencing cooler temperatures and leaves starting to change, Halloween is at the end of the month, and it's Dental Hygiene month! If you were thinking that Dental Hygiene month is important to dentists, you are correct. We love that there is an entire month dedicated to focusing on your dental hygiene.
Dental hygiene is the first step in taking care of your teeth and keeping you from needing costly and time-consuming dental procedures. We’d like to challenge you to five things you can do this month to step up your dental hygiene.
1 – Floss every single day
Flossing is not everyone’s favorite habit and that’s okay, but it is so great for dental hygiene because it breaks up the food stuck between your teeth. No, brushing alone is not good enough to get that food out.
For the next 30 days, challenge everyone in your family to floss every single day – maybe at night during your bedtime routine. You can play music while you do it or even put a show on to make it more fun. At the end of the 30 days, do something together to celebrate that you flossed every day!
2 – Brush after lunch
You should already be brushing your teeth twice every day. If you are not, your challenge for the next 30 days is to brush once in the morning and then again at night, after you’ve flossed.
If you are brushing twice a day, then consider adding in an after-lunch brush. Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste at work, if you can, and take two minutes after lunch to brush your teeth.
3 – Visit your hygienist regularly
Have we seen you in the last six months? Great! Has your hygienist changed your recommendation to be seen every three to four months? Call us now to make sure we have your next appointment already scheduled.
Has it been longer than six months? No problem. Call us now to set up a dental checkup so we can do a thorough cleaning, check for cavities, and go over dental hygiene best practices (including regular dental checkups).
4 – Make one healthy eating swap
Overall, it is best for us to eat a nice balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. Aiming for whole foods, instead of packaged foods, when possible, helps too.
For the next 30 days, try to make one healthy eating swap. Do you eat a lot of ground beef? Try swapping it for ground turkey. Do you eat a lot of sweets? Try swapping dessert one night with an assortment of fresh fruit.
5 – Ditch the sticky candy on Halloween
Listen, we know that those sticky candies taste so good, but they are also really bad for your teeth. They get stuck in between your teeth and in the crevices on top of your teeth. If possible, try to avoid them this Halloween.
Pass over the Sour Patch Kids or Swedish Fish and eat some chocolate instead. If you are giving out candy this year, consider a chocolate candy instead of the sticky candies.
Have a Happy Halloween and Dental Hygiene Month. Don’t forget to make your appointment for a dental checkup!
