It is no secret that humans usually do not have perfectly straight teeth. In fact, so many of us struggle with smile confidence because we don’t feel good about our teeth. Sometimes we get this corrected as kids, but recently we have been seeing more and more adults that are ready to take back their smile and want to get teeth alignment. It is never too late to fix your teeth!
There are two common options for straightening/aligning your teeth: braces and clear aligners. But which one is better? Let’s break down the differences and see.
Permanence
Braces: With traditional braces, you are getting them permanently fixed to your teeth during your treatment period. This means that you will have stainless steel wires and brackets (most likely) in your mouth for as long as needed to straighten your teeth.
Aligners: Clear aligners are made of plastic, essentially clear plastic trays and can be removed for a few hours a day. Now, this is not to say that they should be removed for any reason other than eating meals or cleaning your teeth. If you do not wear your aligners for the recommended 22 hours a day, they will not work as well.
Appearance
Braces: As mentioned above, braces are literally made up of stainless steel wires and brackets, so as you can imagine they are very visible and everyone will know you have them. There is some room for personalization on the rubber bands that go over the brackets. This means every time you adjust them you can change the colors for the season or to represent your favorite sports team!
Aligners: Due to their clear color, aligners can be hard to spot especially from a distance. People tend to like this about clear aligners since it makes it harder for people to know that you are working on fixing your teeth!
Cleaning
Braces: It is very important to keep your teeth clean when you have braces because if you let food or bacteria build up, you will be more prone to cavities. Braces can make it more challenging to floss, but we can help you figure out how to keep flossing every day. It is a good idea to make sure you are brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day with braces just because of how easy it is for food to get stuck in your braces.
Aligners: Because you can remove the aligners, it is much easier to regularly floss and brush your teeth. It is still important to make sure that you keep on top of your daily flossing and brushing and you always want to brush your teeth before putting on your aligners so there is nothing stuck under the aligners.
Restrictions
Braces: Since braces are composed of wires, it is vital that you avoid specific foods that could cause you to pop wires (ouch!) or that could get stuck on your brace brackets. This means anything hard or chewy (so most candy). You should also reduce the amount of carbonated drinks you consume while you have braces.
Aligners: There are not really any food restrictions with clear aligners because you can remove them, but it is important to always remove them before you eat. Also, you should not drink any sugary or carbonated drinks with your aligners in, because the sugar can get caught in between the aligner and your teeth causing bacteria to grow.
As you can see there are some minor differences between braces and clear aligners, but one is not necessarily better than the other. For someone who is forgetful and loses things often, aligners might not be a good choice since you are constantly taking them out. Or maybe because of price you don’t have an option - both work great and both will get your teeth straightened.
