Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, is making headlines this month with his exciting announcement: they are going to have the first all civilian space flight by the end of 2021.
The mission, called Inspiration4, to highlight not only the crew size (four people), but also the overall hope to raise awareness and support for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be led by Jared Issacman. Issacman is the founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments with lots of piloting experience. He will be joined by three other civilians in fulfilling this lifelong dream.
Inspiration4 will go to space using the SpaceX Dragon vessel, launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After their few day mission, they will return to Florida.
Preparing for the mission and the safety of the crew is the top priority. Since this is the first time that there will be no experienced NASA astronaut or Russian cosmonaut to assist, it certainly is a riskier mission. Musk acknowledges that there is always a risk with a crew, and this is no different. SpaceX will make sure to maximize Issacman and the other civilians’ safety by providing training and exercises.
At the most basic level, each person will receive commercial astronaut training and Dragon vessel training. Additionally, they will be trained in space related things like microgravity and zero gravity and spacesuit and spacecraft specifics. Then, they will complete partial and full mission simulations.
While it is not clear how much the ride cost, or how much Issacman paid, it is safe to assume that each ticket cost is in the millions. As Musk says, “things are expensive at first.” He hopes that these early missions will pave the way for more affordable space tourism in the future.
And what is even cooler than an entirely civilian space mission? Doing it for a charity. This entire mission is part of a St. Jude’s Research Hospital fundraiser. Issacman donated $100 million to St. Jude and additionally, sponsored the three remaining seats on the expedition.
So, who will be joining Issacman on this adventure of a lifetime? He’s looking for leaders who are hopeful, generous, and prosperous.
Stay tuned to see the mission depart at the end of the year!
