This week comedian Sarah Silverman made a startling proclamation: she shares a toothbrush with her significant other. Reactions have varied widely from people, but what everyone is wondering is, “is that sanitary?”
We definitely do NOT recommend sharing a toothbrush with anyone and here is why.
We each have different bacteria that grows on our toothbrushes and can lead to an infection. There is a reason you are encouraged to switch out your toothbrush every 3 months, and after serious illness – you don’t want to re-catch something that has been living on your toothbrush. When you use someone else’s toothbrush, you are exposing yourself to different germs that could make you really sick.
Periodontal disease (or gum disease) is often easily caught when you are sharing a toothbrush with someone because of the food particles potentially left on the toothbrush and the germs. It can be a serious disease if left untreated, causing all sorts of issues in your mouth.
Most of us need to use soft toothbrushes so that we don’t damage our teeth or gums, but what happens if you use a toothbrush of someone who is using a medium toothbrush? One use might not hurt, but over time you will start to see the effects of using the wrong kind of toothbrush like sore gums or bleeding.
Toothbrushes when used twice a day will last you about two to three months. If you add in another person using that same toothbrush two to three times a day, your toothbrush’s lifespan gets cut in half meaning you should replace it every month or month and a half. If you aren’t regularly changing your toothbrush, you won’t be getting as good of a cleaning, which can cause cavities and gum disease.
There is really no good reason to share someone’s toothbrush. Of course, if you use an electric toothbrush and each have your own toothbrush head that is totally fine. But using a standard toothbrush should only be done by one person.
This is a great time to check your toothbrushes and see if they are still good. If it’s been a few months or if they look worn down, grab a replacement. And don’t forget to call us to set up your regular cleanings!
