The tongue is such an important part of our body. It helps us eat, drink, talk, and taste. Did you know it can
also alert us of potential health issues just by how it appears or feels?
Here are three ways our tongues can change and what they might mean.
1 – Tongue sensitivity
If you suddenly notice that part or all of your tongue is more sensitive, it may be an indicator of a food
allergy. Try to pay close attention to when you notice the sensitivity – is it after you eat a particular
food? Does it happen with several foods or just one in particular?
If it is a food allergy, it will get better. If it doesn’t make sure to check in with us to see if there is
something else going on!
2 – White coating or patches
A white coating on the tongue can be completely normal, especially if you don’t brush or scrape your
tongue regularly (reminder to add that into your brushing routine!). However, if it won’t come off with
brushing or scraping, it could actually be a symptom of thrush – an overgrowth of yeast occurring in the
oral cavity. Thrush is easily treated with antifungals, but it is something you want to get taken care of
quickly.
If you notice white patches on your tongue, you may have leukoplakia. Leukoplakia tends to appear
when your tongue is experiencing an irritation. We most often see this associated with smoking or other
tobacco use. White patches can also indicate oral cancer, so if you see them, schedule a visit so we can
rule out something more serious.
3 – Red color or bumps
If you notice that your tongue is more red than its usual pink, you might have a vitamin deficiency. We
have found that some adults who are deficient in folic acid or vitamin B-12 have a tongue that appears
more red. An easy fix is to add some supplements into your daily routine.
If you see red bumps on your tongue, you may have a fever! As our body fights off a virus and spikes a
fever, it is possible for our tongue to develop irregular red bumps. They are usually not a concern and go
away when the fever subsides.
The tongue is an amazing body part and can tell us so much. Remember, if you experience any sort of
change in your mouth, teeth, or tongue schedule a check-up!
