It should come as no surprise that whole foods that are not processed and don’t have added sugars are best for our overall health, including your mouth!
Here are five healthy foods that are good for your teeth.
1 – Green Tea
Did you know that green tea can be beneficial for your teeth? Green tea has antimicrobial agents that can limit the bacteria responsible for gum disease and tooth decay. Green tea also has fluoride! Fluoride is important for strengthening tooth enamel.
Just like with coffee, too much green tea could cause tooth staining so keep that in mind.
2 – Fresh Greens
Leafy greens are full of folic acid, which helps us fight gum disease, and calcium. While dairy can be one of the best sources of calcium to help with tooth development, leafy greens are a great nondairy option. Some of our favorite options are lettuce, broccoli, collard greens, and kale.
3 – Lean Meat
Most of the lean sources of protein (fish, poultry, eggs) have phosphorus which is really good for our teeth. Fish is a great source of protein and it is omega-3 fatty acids which help with so many things including helping your mouth fight off potential periodontal infections. Omega-3 fatty acids also help with gum health.
Mackerel and salmon have very high omega-3 fatty acid levels.
4 – Water
Water is so crucial for a healthy mouth. If you aren’t drinking enough water, you can see an increase in dry mouth and tooth decay. You want to make sure that the majority of what you drink in a day is water. Tap water usually has monitored fluoride levels while bottled water can sometimes be very acidic.
Choose tap water and save money while helping the environment!
5 – Dark Chocolate
Just because you are eating healthy does not mean you can’t have a treat every now and then. Dark chocolate has been dubbed a super food because it has less sugar (usually) than other chocolates and has natural antioxidant properties.
While eating healthy and drinking lots of water help with your overall dental health, don’t forget the important of regular dentist visits! Call us today to schedule your next checkup.
