At times, medications are an absolute necessity in our overall health. Whether it be for a few days, a few weeks, or even months, at some point we all need end up taking a medication, vitamin, or supplement. What you may not realize is that any of those can actually impact your oral health!
Here are three ways that your medications could be affecting your mouth and teeth.
1 – Change of Taste
There are some medications that cause a bitter or metallic taste in your mouth while you are taking them. There are also medications that can actually change how you taste things. If you are taking any of the following and do experience some taste changes, they may be the culprit:
2 – Dry Mouth
Several medications can actually cause dry mouth, or a reduction in the saliva in your mouth. While this may not seem like a huge issue, the dryness can irritate the soft tissue in the mouth making it more prone to infections. Saliva also helps clean your teeth, so if you have less saliva in your mouth you are more susceptible to tooth decay. Dry mouth causes a change in the PH in your mouth, making it more acidic which can greatly increase the incidence of periodontal disease and decay.
Some medication types that are known for causing dry mouth are:
This can be a very serious problem for those people who use asthma inhalers, so we often recommend rinsing with water afterwards to keep your mouth less dry.
3 – Bleeding
Aspirin and anticoagulants are known for reducing blood clotting, which is why they are so helpful in preventing people from experiencing strokes or heart attacks. However, because of this, there is the potential for added bleeding during oral surgery or other dental procedures. Make sure your dentist is aware if you are taking these prior to any significant dental procedures.
These are just a few of the ways medications can affect your oral health. It is very important to tell your dentist what medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking so we can fully understand your current oral health situation. If you are scheduled for a dental procedure, it is even more important to disclose your medications.
