Spring is here! Finally, the Northern Virginia area is seeing warm Spring weather and sunny days often. It feels like we went through a long winter, having cold weather that kept coming back.
Now that it is warm out and we have more sunlight during the day, it is the perfect time to get out of the house on the weekend and get back into nature.
We recently discovered several waterfalls located in Virginia that we think would make for a perfect weekend activity that you would do with the whole family!
The first waterfall is Cascades Falls, a 3.8 out and back trail in Pembroke Virginia. At the end of the trail you will see not only a 66-foot-tall waterfall, but also a swimming hole! This is perfect for a hot day when you want to go for a swim.
The second waterfall is Bent Mountain Falls where you can walk the scenic 3.7-mile trail (total) to see the 200-foot-tall waterfall. Located in Montgomery Virginia this waterfall is Virginia’s second tallest waterfall!
Another great spot is Apple Orchard Falls, located in Buchanan Virginia. This is a more challenging trail, despite being only 2.9 miles. This may be one that is better without the kids!
Falling Spring Falls in Alleghany is dubbed as one of the most photographed waterfalls in all of Virginia. This one is ideal for those who aren’t up for a hike as you can get a very good view of it from the parking lot.
The last waterfall on our list is Crabtree Falls, located in Nelson County Virginia. Crabtree Falls is the tallest and longest waterfall in Virginia, at an impressive 1200 feet. It is not a traditional waterfall but is made up of several different drops. It has a total of five different drops within the entire waterfall, the longest being 400 feet. You can view it from the parking lot or hike a trail.
While all of these may not be able to be visited in one weekend, we think it would be a fun challenge to spend a few weekends going to see them! You can even research the area to find a spot for lunch near by or bring lunch with you to picnic. Any time outdoors is great for your physical and mental health!
