Tooth pain can present in many different ways: tooth sensitivity, pain when chewing or eating, swelling around a tooth, or just pain in the tooth when you are doing nothing.
Toothaches can be tedious and can be a sign of a larger issue.
Here are some common culprits of a toothache.
1 – Stress
When we are stressed, our body responds in some strange ways. For some of us that means random stomach aches, for others it means suddenly having restless leg syndrome, and then for others it means grinding our teeth at night. You may not even know you are grinding your teeth, yet your teeth are painful during the day. Luckily, we can easily diagnose it and help you secure a mouth guard to prevent that pesky pain.
2 – Infections
There are a few infections in your mouth that can result in tooth pain, including gum disease. When you have gum disease your gums recede leaving more of the tooth exposed, especially the root. This can make your teeth more sensitive in general and can also cause pain.
Outside of the mouth, oftentimes people will experience tooth pain when they have a sinus infection. Because of the closeness of the sinus cavities and the mouth, it makes sense that when the sinuses are inflamed, the teeth can be collateral damage.
3 – Damage
Teeth are susceptible to accidents and trauma just like every other part of our body. Perhaps you bit down on a hard nut or piece of candy and broke off a piece of enamel. Or you were hit in the face with a ball during a sports game. Both of these scenarios could result in a cracked tooth, which can be very painful.
In addition to accidents, damage to our teeth from lack of care occurs often. When we don’t brush and floss regularly, we leave our teeth open to growing bacteria. Bacteria leads to acid and acid creates holes, or cavities. Based on the location and severity of the cavity, they can become very painful even causing pain in the tooth or jaw.
