Electric toothbrushes can be great tools for stepping up your brushing game. Are they right for everyone? Does everyone need an electric toothbrush? No, they don’t. However, most people could benefit from switching to an electric toothbrush.
Here are some questions to help you figure out if you should switch to an electric toothbrush.
Do you always brush for long enough?
We know it can be easy to think you are brushing for the suggested two minutes, but in actuality, two minutes is a long time and most patients we see aren’t meeting the full two minutes.
With an electric toothbrush you get a built-in timer that helps you keep brushing. Even if I want to stop, my toothbrush will keep going until I’ve hit that two-minute mark!
Do you use the right amount of pressure when brushing?
If you have noticed that your gums hurt after brushing your teeth or that they are bleeding, you may be using the wrong type of brush and/or brushing too hard. You don’t want to use a lot of pressure when brushing.
With an electric toothbrush, you will have standardized pressure when brushing. Newer ones even have pressure sensors to tell you when you are exerting too much pressure while brushing.
Has your dentist mentioned your plaque build-up?
If your last dental visit resulted in a discussion on plaque with an emphasis on brushing, an electric toothbrush might be the key.
With an electric toothbrush, the oscillating and vibrating creates a series of micro movements that help dislodge and get rid of plaque buildup on your teeth. Electric toothbrushes have been found to be more effective at removing plaque.
Do you forget to change your toothbrush regularly?
If you are in the habit of not changing your toothbrush every few months, then you need to start! Not only do toothbrushes gather germs, but they also lose effectiveness over time.
With an electric toothbrush, depending on the kind you get, there are reminders to change your brush head or there are even ones you can buy that will automatically send you the replacement brushes every three months. If you never change your toothbrush, then one with an automatic replacement subscription sounds like a great option.
You certainly don’t need to buy an electric toothbrush if your manual toothbrush has been working for you, but there are definite benefits to using an electric toothbrush.
