Teenagers, young adults, and adults all over are switching from the traditionally “bad” cigarettes to the “good” vapes (e-cigarettes). They are all under the impression that quitting cigarettes and switching instead to a vape is better for them and maybe even healthy.
While the research is still coming in (it just hasn’t been long enough), it already indicates that vaping still has its own set of issues. Unsurprisingly, many of these issues are in your mouth.
So, how does vaping affect your oral health?
1 – Bacteria
Usually, you have good bacteria in your mouth that helps fight off infections and inflammation. When you are vaping, the constant action of hitting the vape causes dry mouth and makes the bacteria in your mouth stressed. When the bacteria is stressed it can’t do its job to protect you, thus making you more susceptible to inflammation and disease.
2- Cavities
While most of us associate cavities with sugar and sugary drinks, there are a lot of things that can cause cavities. For example, the acidity in that strawberry or watermelon vape can cause them too. If you think about the amount of time (depending on how often you vape) you are exposing your mouth to that acidity, it becomes easy to imagine how you could get more cavities just from vaping.
3 – Periodontal disease
Periodontal disease – or the infection and inflammation of the gums – is becoming a top diagnosis for younger adults and teenagers. This is a change from the past and most likely due to the uptick in vaping.
While on the surface it doesn’t sound too bad, periodontal disease can be very painful and it also has been tied to an increased risk of strokes. Something that affects your mouth can also affect your overall health – that’s pretty scary.
Our mouth is one of the toughest tissues we have on our entire body. When something gets damaged, it can usually repair itself pretty quickly. However, when your mouth is constantly exposed to the same trauma (aka vaping), it can stop healing as quickly. This means that some minor issues will become irreversible issues.
Vaping can have serious side effects on your oral health. One way to help offset these issues is to stay on top of your dental hygiene (flossing and brushing every day) and make sure to see your dentist regularly.
