Dental impressions might be one of the most complained about parts of dental work. Unfortunately, if you need braces, a crown, veneers, or a bridge you will also need to get dental impressions.
Until recently, your only option for a dental impression was a physical one, but now with all the advancements in technology there are also digital impressions.
Let’s see how the two different techniques compare.
Physical Impressions
Physical dental impressions are the standard as they have been around for a long time. With a physical dental impression, you get a gooey material pushed into your teeth and it stays there for the two to five minutes it takes for the material to set.
If the material hasn’t set, it will have to get pushed back on your teeth. Most people find the process of pushing the impression on their teeth to be the most uncomfortable. We do have to get it really tight to make sure that all the indents, gaps, and features are captured.
Physical impressions are very accurate and usually result in dental hardware that fits perfectly.
Digital Impressions
Digital dental impressions are pretty new in the dental industry and an exciting alternative for those people who may not physically be able to stand the old way of doing impressions.
There are a few popular digital impression options available: Lava Chairside Oral Scanner, Sirona’s CEREC, and the Cadent iTero. Instead of using the gooey material to take an impression, these tools take digital impressions of your teeth and mouth. After prepping your teeth for the impression, a wand is used to capture them and the entire process takes about 90 seconds.
Dentists who have been taking advantage of digital impressions are pleasantly surprised by the results,
noting that the fit of the dental hardware has been great and needed less final adjustments.
Which is better?
There isn’t a one size fits all answer here. Both options work really well and it may just be a matter of availability and preference. If your dental office offers digital impressions, you may opt for that. If you don’t have any issues with the physical impressions, you may opt for that.
The research is still out on the digital impression just because they are so new, but for now they seem like a great alternative to the traditional physical impressions.
As always, make sure you are scheduling your annual exams – it is never to early to get all your 2023
appointments made!
