We recently got a question from a young adult about their wisdom teeth and knew it would make a great blog post since there are probably other people wondering the same thing.
Hi! I am in my 20s and still have my wisdom teeth, but everyone I know has gotten them removed. Should I also get them removed? How will I know if they need to come out?
This is a great question because, realistically, not everyone will need their wisdom teeth out. You may be surprised by this, but it is true. There are people who will live their whole lives with their wisdom teeth.
So, how do you know if you should have them removed? Here are some classic signs that your wisdom teeth need to come out.
This means that your wisdom teeth are trapped under the gums and will not be able to erupt.
This can result in infections and even damage the other teeth.
When your wisdom teeth only come out partially, they can be hard to clean, leading to bacteria and infections.
Sometimes your wisdom teeth will erupt fully but crowd your other teeth and mess up your bite.
If your wisdom teeth are causing you sensitivity and pain, it could be time to get them removed.
These are several examples of when a dentist will recommend removing your wisdom teeth and usually they want to remove them before things get worse.
But you don’t always need to get them out. If they aren’t causing any issues, you can oftentimes keep your wisdom teeth.
Here are the reasons why you don’t need to get your wisdom teeth out:
If you still have wisdom teeth your dentist will keep an eye on them through your regular exams and dental x-rays. In some cases, that is all you need, and they grow in fine with no issues. In other cases, your dentist will recommend removing them if there are issues.
